Our Marbella People Interview today is with: Tony Murphy

Tony Murphy – Architect

Tony has been living in Marbella for over 26 years and ran one of the first English language video shops in Spain. Working as an Architect since 1985 Tony has seen a lot of the comings and goings on the coast.

How long have you lived in Spain and how long is your business established?
Tony Murphy: I have lived in Spain for 26 years and have been practicing as an architect here since 1985. However my first business was the first English language video shop in Spain.

Why did you choose Marbella?
Tony Murphy: I had been coming here for several years on holidays and already had friends here. I have always loved Marbella for the climate, the people and the lifestyle.

Tell us your greatest business or personal accomplishment?
Tony Murphy: As an architect I suppose getting my first Spanish client was a milestone. It was a clear sign that I had been accepted locally. I am currently working on a project which I believe will become my greatest architectural achievement, but for the moment cannot say more about it.

Why would you recommend the Costa del Sol for business and Lifestyle?
Tony Murphy: I have always thought the Spanish have the balance between career and lifestyle just right. Work is very important, and Spaniards work hard, but it is not the most important thing in their lives. They make time for their personal lives and seem to know how to enjoy life without extremes.

If you could change one thing about Spain, what would it be?
Tony Murphy: I still find the bureaucracy stretches my patience.

Describe yourself in 3 words.
Tony Murphy: Myself in 3 words: Honest, intelligent and creative.

What is your favourite Restaurant in Marbella?
Tony Murphy: It’s very hard to pick one favourite because it can change from season to season with so many restaurants here. However, right now my top three would be The Polo House, Finca Besaya and Naga Thai.

What is the last film you saw at the Cinema or DVD?
Tony Murphy: The last film I saw at the cinema was the amazing Slumdog Millionaire.

What advice would you give to someone moving to Spain?
Tony Murphy: Bring twice as much money as you think you need and double your time estimates.

Name one other business you would recommend on the Costa del Sol and why?
Tony Murphy: A company that has stood out since the day I discovered them is a building company called Grupo T.C. The quality of their work, their prices and their after sales service makes them an exceptional company.
