Benjamin Nott of 5B Design

Benjamin NottOur Marbella People Interview today is with Benjamin Nott of 5B Design. Benjamin has been living in Spain for over 5 years now after visiting Marbella for a two week holiday back in 2001. Benjamin is an architect by profession and runs the successful 5BDesign consultancy.

How long have you lived in Spain and how long is your business established?

Benjamin Nott: I have been living in Spain for 5 years and the business has been running for 3 years.

Why did you choose Marbella?

Benjamin Nott: My parents decided to move to Marbella in 2001. I had just finished my honours degree in Architecture at University in South Africa and came out for a 2 week holiday to help my parents get ‘setup’ in Marbella.

I took one look at the developments happening here on the Costa del Sol, experienced a similar climate to what I was used to and realized the opportunities to work in an environment that I was accustomed to. It also helped with having the family close.

The only thing lacking was my Spanish, but I knew that could be learnt with some effort.

Tell us your greatest business or personal accomplishment?

Benjamin Nott: I feel that as a business model, we are evolving continuously with many small and varied achievements.

The most important for me is taking on the established competition and changing the mould of how an architect or a designer should work for a client.

Doing extensive research and offering clients the very best in product and design knowledge as well as listening to the clients’ needs rather than building a monument without a soul.

Why would you recommend the Costa del Sol for business and Lifestyle?

Benjamin Nott: In truth, the Costa del Sol is not for everyone. It is a tough place to integrate into and one you might never fully achieve.

The language is important and it is a place that you have to work hard in to get long-term rewards. As a lifestyle, it is unique to Europe, but not to the rest of the world.

Depending on where you are from and compared to most places in the world Marbella offers a vast amount of lifestyle choices, not just locally but also nationally.

It all depends what you are looking for and if you live to work or work to live!!!

If you could change one thing about Spain, what would it be?

Benjamin Nott: I think I would have to say the negativity towards Spain.

This is from the locals and the foreigners equally.

Compared to where I am from, this place has stability, a lot to offer and a great future.

Be positive about your environment.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Benjamin Nott: Driven, Honourable, Humble

What is your favourite Restaurant in Marbella?

Benjamin Nott: Really depends what I am in the mood for. But top of the list would be Caruso in San Pedro, Casanis in Marbella.

I do need to mention Zen Art in Malaga, even though it is outside Marbella.

What is the last film you saw at the Cinema or DVD?

Benjamin Nott: At the cinema I have just seen ‘Los Borgia’ and the last DVD that I watched was ‘Tsotsi’.

What advice would you give to someone moving to Spain?

Benjamin Nott: Give Spain time, be patient with the way it works. Most of all take your time to get to know how it works.

Learn the language and make an effort to integrate with the people that live and work here permanently.

Name one other business you would recommend on the Costa del Sol and why?

Benjamin Nott: PSI – Project Management, Surveys and Inspections. This is my fathers and brothers business.

They manage all of our projects and service a lot of the real estate business with property surveys, home buyers surveys, structural surveys, Hand-over Inspection reports and various other professional services linked to property and development.

Another company we work a lot with and I would recommend is Ultra-T. They are a team of audio and visual as well as electrical guys that know there stuff and can install it themselves with good after sales service.
