Open de Espana Femenino on the Costa del Sol

Starting from 16th September, the four-day Open de Espana Femenino golf tournament is currently underway at the Los Flamingos Golf Club in Benahavis near Marbella on the Costa del Sol.

Since 2002, the Open de Espana Femenino has been listed as a professional golf tournament under the belt of the Ladies European Tour. Marbella and nearby areas on the Mediterranean coast are considered amongst the best golf playing places in Spain.

The Los Flamingos Golf Club is the official venue for Open de Espana Femenino 2010-2015. Designed by Antonio García Garrido, the golf course is known as the ‘Tuscan garden’ of the famous Hotel Villa Padierna, where Michelle Obama spent her holidays earlier this summer.

Both the Women’s Open of Spain and the Madrid Ladies Masters constitute important places in the Ladies European Tour Calendar. Ladies European Tour, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, has so far played tournaments in Australia, Spain, Turkey, Ireland, Sweden, China, Korea, and Germany with much success.

The Costa del Sol has the highest concentration of golf courses in Europe, with 63 courses around Malaga, distributed over 13 municipalities. There are 18 golf courses around Marbella, followed by Mijas with 12 and further courses in the Cadiz area. Of the 354 Spanish golf courses, 102 are in Andalusia.
