About Mary Ellen Mark:
Born in Philadelphia in 1940, Mary Ellen Mark began her 50 year career at the young age of nine using a Box Brownie camera. Her interest in painting and drawing during her high school years led her to study painting and art history at the University of Pennsylvania in the late 50´s.
She turned professional in the mid-1960s and after graduating in 1965, Mary Ellen Mark was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to photograph various places in Europe for a year. Over time, she became known for her photojournalism, portraiture and advertising photography as well as working as a unit photographer on film sets, shooting stills. Her earlier films included Alice’s Restaurant (1969), Catch-22 (1970), Carnal Knowledge (1971) and Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now in 1979 and has since photographed on the sets of more than 100 films during her career.
Her black and white photography has tackled various social issues such as homelessness, loneliness, drug addiction, and prostitution and has earned her a reputation as one of America’s most influential and respected photographers to date.
“A good print is really essential. I want to take strong documentary photographs that are as good technically as any of the best technical photographs, and as creative as any of the best fine-art photographs. I don’t want to just be a photo essayist; I’m more interested in single images…. ones that I feel are good enough to stand on their own”. – Mary Ellen Mark
The exhibition is open from Monday to Saturday from 10am until 10pm.
