About Julião Sarmento:

Born in Portugal in 1948, Julião Sarmento studied Painting and Architecture at Lisbon School of Fine Arts, from 1967 to 1974. It was in the seventies that Sarmento not only began exhibiting film, video, sound, painting, sculpture, installation and multimedia in the seventies, but also developed several important site-specific projects.

Having taught all over the world including Japan, Germany and Spain, you can find Julião Sarmento´s work in the most prominent museums in the world such as The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Musée National d’Art Moderne Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Holland and the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo.

Julião Sarmento’s work is most notable for his extraordinary ability to raise issues that go beyond visuality, even creating a reality that moves between experience and memory. He raises a dilemma with his audience to choose between spirituality and eroticism, morality and sexuality and narrative and speech.
