Through a non-legislative proposal, the Mayor of Marbella has offered a 3000 sq mt to the Junta de Andalucia for the construction of a new Official Language School in Marbella (Escuela Oficial de Idiomas en Marbella). The property owned by the municipality is proposed to be invested for educational facilities under the new General Plan.
Municipal delegate of Education, Carmen Diaz, stressed the lack of investment in education by the autonomous administration in the municipality, and told that with increasing demand, the Government of Andalusia could no longer ignore the need of Marbella for an Official Language School.
It has also been explained that the current centre, with an area of 1,000 sq mt has no ability to meet the growing demands. Each year more than 900 students are left out without registration with the lack of adequate resource.
It is also informed that even though the municipality has invested more than 80,000 euros to improve the educational infrastructure and environment, new initiatives are essential to meet the necessities.
For this reason, the plot offered by the local authority is expected to provide a long-term solution to this problem by constructing a building with a basement, two floors and the possibility of parking spaces that would be able to meet needs of more students.
Carmen Diaz has also reiterated that for the municipal government “education is a priority” which is evident from the fact that it has promoted the construction of a new conservatory, two canteens and three new preschools in spite of being out of municipal competence.
