Affective-sexual education in Marbella

The Spanish government has not adopted any general programme on sex education, but under the new regulation of state education system, the Ley Organica de Ordenacion General del Sistema Educativo (LOGSE), it proposes some minimal sexual issues in school. Costa del Sol city Marbella, too, promotes sex education and healthy living in the educational context.

Realising the need to develop programme on affective sexual education, the Marbella Solidaria belonging to the Delegation of Social Welfare in collaboration with the Delegation for Equality of the municipality, has taught in the 2009-10 school year a program of Affective-Sexual Education for all students in Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) or Compulsory Secondary Education of the town.

More than 1000 students were taught social and affective sexual education as a part of their secondary curriculum. The programme aims to foster an affective-sexual education from a standpoint of equality between men and women and respect for different sexual orientations.

The programme is a sociological approach to the promotion of sex education in school curriculum through which it aims to empower students with the necessary knowledge to enable them to enjoy healthy sexuality with perceptiveness to cultivate an ethic appropriate interpersonal relationship.

Moreover, as said, the affective-sexual education also brings an understanding to school students in order to promote sexual and gender equity and prevent gender violence. The course of study covers different subjects related to gender, sexuality, affectivity and the body.

Even though sex education in school has been refuted by many, going by the cultural values, affective sexual education and policy has been a subject of discussion to be included in the formal curriculum. The local authority of Marbella, too, wishes to impart knowledge of gender and sexuality to the adolescent population of the town.
