Marbella International Film Festival

The much anticipated Marbella International Film Festival was staged with much fanfare during 1st October to 4th October 2009. Organised by SISU Vision, Ayuntamiento de Marbella and Cines Gran Marbella, the festival was a huge success in its fourth instance in the presence of international audience and media. Hotel Lorcrimar and Novelli’s restaurant in Puerto Banus were home to the festival.

The 4th Marbella International Film Festival, in its sole objective to promote independent film making, has been a platform for emerging talents in terms of film makers and artists to showcase their creativity to an international market. It is to bring value for the talent within the world of cinema by bringing them closer to the commercial arena.

This year’s festival has shown its future significance which is one-of-its kind in this Costa del Sol resort town. It is not only open for local or Spanish language films but also works from Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Middle East to encourage multi-cultural art. However, the final list of exhibition is chosen after analyzing the highest calibre of independent artistic work.

Out of the total 650 entries, only 50 works were selected for exhibition for 2009’s festival. Apart from the support from Marbella Town Hall, Marbella Film Office, Junta de Andalucía and an international sales and film production company New World Films, the festival has its backing from some high profile actors, film producers, celebrities and local dignitaries with their presence during the event.

Besides the film exhibition, there were various other events run alongside in Marbella throughout the year such as photography competition, art exhibitions, short film competition, industry workshop, etc. adding elements to glitz and glamour of the town. Going by the cosmopolitan nature, Marbella International Film Festival is now a major event in the Spanish event calendar.

Apart from screening and premiers, the four-day event also featured special dance, dinner, cocktail shows and several other live performances to entertain the audience. On the final day, there were few noticeable events like the workshop by producer John Schwab, dance show by Jayne Melville at Festival Village along with a gala dinner and closing award ceremonies to sign off the event for this year.

Like any other international film festival, the event in Marbella also encourages debate around the future of film making and their production and distribution in a market driven environment. Moreover, Marbella International Film Festival is also a meeting point of different cultures through the medium of Cinema.
