Due to its privileged location, the city of Marbella on the Costa del Sol in Andalucia, Spain, is one of the Mediterranean’s most representative tourist venues. With a highly developed coastline stretch over 26 km, the city is protected from the cold north winds by the mountains of the Sierra Blanca.
Being at the centre of huge bay of clean sandy beaches, and moreover the proximity of the mountains to the coast, the city boasts a micro climate offering tremendous possibilities for tourism. Most of the lands along the coastline are either used as golf course or left unexploited those long green areas.
The city occupies the centre of the western Costa del Sol, between the coast and the mountain range. The mountain range is in fact the best possible feature which defines the topography of the region. The physical geography of Marbella can be classified into five different units: the Sierra Blanca foothills, ridges, hills, plains and dunes.
Most of the Old Town of Marbella city centre comes under the Sierra Blanca territory which is mountainous in the northern part. The striking mountain has three peaks: the La Concha located to the west of 1215 m above the sea level; the La Cruz de Juana to the east placed 1178 m above sea; and the Lastonar located between the two that with 1275 metres is the highest mountain of the Sierra Blanca.
Beside, the topography of Marbella constitutes extensive coastal plains, and then terrains occupied by mountains and hills with an elevation of 100 to 400 metres. This too lives in with some scenic surroundings of the foothills and wonderful views of the city.
The Mediterranean coastline in Marbella is located on low latitude thereby inviting direct heat and sunlight all year long. The eastern end of town has some dune areas like the Artola Dunes still exists, despite the intense urbanisation.
With such a diverse geography that sets the tone of a favourable climate, Marbella boasts excellent panoramic ocean views amid a typical surrounding atmosphere which is characterised by dry, hot summer with mild and rainy winter.
The north aligned Sierra Blanca mountain ranges, the proximity of Mediterranean Sea, low lands in areas like Ronda and long stretched coastline are some key features of the geography of this Costa del Sol city.
