English speaking films with foreign languages spoken in the film will usually result in spanish sub titles being shown, not english ones.
A few of the cinemas down here on the coast kindly show films in the native language that the film has been made in and as most film releases are American or British, this usually means that the spoken language of the film is in English.
In Spanish, this type of film is quite commonly known as “V.O.S.E”.
V – Versiòn (Version)
O – Original (Original)
S – Subtitilado en (Subtitled in)
E – Español (Spanish)
V.O.S.E basically means that the film is in its original language with Spanish subtitles so for a film such as Mary Poppins, a film with no subtitles, the whole film will be in the English language.
However, this will be different for films such as Slumdog Millionaire where in many parts of the film the actors speak Indian. In this case the subtitles will be in Spanish, because the film is V.O.S.E.
A while back I received many emails from people complaining about the Mel Gibson film “Apocolypse” where throughout the film, the Mayan language was spoken, with Spanish subtitles which meant anyone who could not speak spanish or understand spanish language (let alone Mayan!) colud not understand pretty much most of the film.
