Flavia upset Carla to win Andalucia tennis title

Italian Flavia Pennetta upset the Spaniard Carla Suarez in over two-hour long final of the Andalucia Tennis Experience tournament on Sunday. The second seeded Italian claimed her first WTA singles title of the year in an exciting match that ended with 6-2 4-6 6-3.

Pennetta gave a fine performance in the first set, leading 5-1 but Carla came back with a tough fight to level the match at one set all. In the second set Carla broke the service of her opponent but of Pennetta broke Carla’s service in return to gain 2-2 result on the board. In the end, few unforced errors by the Italian let the Spaniard to dominate with 6-4.

Although booth struggled to hold their serve in the final set, more aggressive game from 28-year-old Pennetta made it impossible for Carla to hold lead. The fourth game which last over ten minutes ended in favour of the Spaniard, but the world number 16 Pennetta rallied back quickly to seal the victory.

It was yet again unfortunate for Carla who just like on the last year final against Jelena Jankovic came quite close but couldn’t win her first trophy on the circuit.

“I am not disappointed at all…in my opinion Flavia was the greatest favourites of this tournament and although I leave with a bitter taste, I think I played a good tournament,” said the 21-year-old Carla after the match.

Pennetta was a two-time US Open quarter-finalist who had also reached the 2005 US Open Women’s doubles. In this game, she was 72% perfect in her first serve in comparison to 52% of Carla. The Italian won the final four games of the match.

Sara and Roberta win the Doubles

Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci clinched the victory in doubles at Andalucia Tennis Experience tournament. They defeated Kondratieva and Shvedova in two straight sets 6-4 6-2 in only 1 hour and few minutes to hold their first title together.

In an interview published in the official website of the tournament, the Tournament Director Conchita Martinez expressed her satisfaction and pleasure over the success of the championship and expected to see it in a better scale next year.

“It is growing each year …We will keep working on the third edition so it will even better than previous ones and to make the Andalusia Tennis Experience tournament be one of the top tournaments on the circuit,” she said.
