Puerto Deportivo de Marbella or the Marbella Marina, located along the Paseo Maritmo, is typically a fishing port that has great importance in the economy of the region. In recent times, with numerous developments around, this has become a centre of social activity.
The present day Marina also has a long history that goes back to early 18th century when it was a cluster of warehouses built with extensive roofs and Moorish tiles. It was only in the 19th century that the Marina changed from an essential commercial centre to an area of fishermen.
Although the density of fishermen was not that high, and there were only a small group of people living in those old wine and grape warehouses, the Town Hall later brought the proposal to build a port in the Marina which was vital for the development of the town.
The proposed plan for a port and the building work was signed on 13th March 1793, while the design was made by Tomas Munoz. In the original plan of the port, there were two piers: one facing the east and the other to the west, which was going to be located where the Nautical Club is today.
As per the plan, the first one was finished off with a semicircular platform, but due to the war of independence the subsequent works of the port came to a halt. The port building works although began again in July 1818; financial difficulties force a delay of work.
It was King Fernando VII who recommenced work in 1819 with hundreds of forced labourers but in addition to the financial constraints, the movement of seabed sand further forced to suspend the work in 1830. The stone duck that was left incomplete in recent times reworked to a leisure harbour.
Irrespective of all those difficulties in the completion of the port as it was originally intended, the Marbella Marina certainly was a catalyst to the development the iron industry, with the installation of an iron dock which was later removed though.
In between the foundation of Maritime Club of Marbella in 1957 and the special project drawn up by D. Alberto Diaz Fraga, the Marina came into its present form by 1980. Now, the harbour is equipped with all kinds of modern facilities and services for the users.
Apart from all those commercial tourist developments, you will find facilities for yachting, scuba diving and various other water sports, along with restaurants and eating outs for a perfect time out. The Marina is open all year round; for more information, please contact the administrative authority on the address given below.
