Our Marbella People Interview today is with David Mills of Mills & Mills Medical Group. David and Debbie Mills have been living on the coast permanently since August 2005 since deciding to launch their cosmetic surgery business in Marbella, January 2006.

How long have you lived in Spain and how long is your business established?

David Mills: We have been visiting Spain for some years as property owners, and we have been living here full time since last August.

Our company was two years in the planning and was launched in January 2006.

Why did you choose Marbella?

David Mills: There is a large demand for cosmetic surgery on the Costa del Sol, both from people living on the coast and from The United Kingdom.
The standard and quality of our hospital was another factor.

Also, Spain is not too far in terms of travelling time for our UK clients.

Debbie and I knew that our clients were looking for value and top quality treatment, in an English Speaking environment. Marbella is famous for quality and we want to bring cosmetic surgery into this branding.

Last, but not least, we wanted to make this area our home.

Tell us your greatest business or personal accomplishment?

David Mills: I worked as a senior manager and board director of a large private medical group in the UK for 25 years.

I assisted with its growth from a turnover of £1 million per annum to over £ 30 million when I left for Spain.

Why would you recommend the Costa del Sol for business and Lifestyle?

David Mills: It is a wonderful place to live because of the climate and culture, and a tremendous environment in which to raise a family.

The Spanish seem to have an enviable balance to their lives. (I am still learning this one)

The Costa del Sol has a vibrant business community and there are tremendous opportunities for those willing to work hard and focus on good service.

The diversity of new businesses here is incredible.

If you could change one thing about Spain, what would it be?

David Mills: The amount of paperwork… for everything.

David Mills: Hardworking, loyal, and trustworthy.

What is your favourite Restaurant in Marbella?

David Mills: The Thai Restaurant in Nueva Andalucia.

Also a fabulous fish restaurant on the port in Puerto Banús, all decorated in blue, but I can’t remember the name.

What is the last film you saw at the Cinema or DVD?

David Mills: The Interpreter (according to my kids).

What advice would you give to someone moving to Spain?

David Mills: First, plan very carefully, and then when you think you have… start again.

Try to learn Spanish, believe me, you will need it.

Name one other business you would recommend on the Costa del Sol and why?

David Mills: Earth and Ocean and Nvision Studio. If you intend to open a business here you must have good marketing advice from people who speak English and know the local market.
