Incarnation Church Marbella

Located in the Church Square of the Marbella Old Town region, Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation (Iglesia Mayor de la Encarnación) has a long historical background back to 1485, when Marbella was re-conquered by the Catholic Kings after a long Moorish rule. It was now a prominent visiting spot in and around the historic centre.

It was constructed in 1505 and named as “Saint Mary of the Incarnation”. The name, in fact, denotes the Christian faith against the doctrine of Mohammed, who denies the mystery of the incarnation. Between 1720 and 1756, the Church had undergone a number of modification, however, it looks a like a cathedral church.

Presently, there are two entrances (west and north) while the Church had originally three entrances; the third one to the south side has been closed since 19th century. The ocher stone doorway in the main entrance was built somewhere in the second half of the eighteenth century with refined taste rococo work.

One of the attractions of the church is the bell tower which is estimated an approximate height of 33 metres. Crowned with a tiled pyramidal spire, the tower has four sections with bells and clocks. The oldest bell is installed in the eastern side.

On the north side, the bell called “Holy Trinity” while on the west it is “Saint Barnabas”, and on the south side the bell is named as “Virgin of the Incarnation”.

To the left of the church, entering through the front door, is the chapel of the Immaculate, which are already in the side of the nave, the altar of Christ Peace, Old Souls and after San Isidro the chapel of Jesus of Nazareth, the altar of the Virgen del Pilar, and, finally, beside the altar, the chapel of the Virgin of Fatima.

Presently, the Church houses the Lady of Solitude – Virgen de la Soledad, the Church is an important religious point and holds many ecclesiastical events, especially during Easter. It is opened daily, and visitors are allowed for prayer and observation from 8.00 to 22.00.
