Starting from March 24, there is a special painting exhibition underway at the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engravings, Bazan Hospital. Both the Municipal Delegation of Culture and Education, and the Museum are jointly organising the event.
The exhibition, which will continue till April 24th, features paintings from a private collection that have been temporarily placed at the museum for display. It’s a travelogue created by the renowned Scottish artist and painter David Roberts (1796-1864) in his journey to Egypt in the spring of 1838.
He portrays a journey to the East after covering France, Italy, Malta and the Greek islands of Delos and Crete, to land at Alexandria on September 24 of that year, accompanied on the last leg of the voyage Mediterranean by a large group of Muslim pilgrims on their way to Mecca.
The trip, relatively long time, taking into account the means and conditions of the time, took him to visit Egypt from north to south along the Nile until they reached the second cataract, in the region of Nubia, and return by the same route to Cairo, where he remained from November to February next year when he went to the Sinai peninsula, heading for Jerusalem.
On his way, he witnessed the splendour of ancient Rome in the East and produced a vast collection of drawings and watercolour sketches. In collaboration with lithographer Louis Haghe from 1842 to 1849, Robert produced a total of 247 lithographs in six volumes that also constitute pictures of the Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia and Nubia.
