Our Marbella People Interview today is with Marijke De Nier of Residencia Estates. Marijke is a veteran resident of Spain and has been living here for over 16 years. Marijke’s determination and energy have allowed her to build up one of the most exclusive Real Estate Companies on the coast.
How long have you lived in Spain and how long is your business established?
Marijke De Nier: I have lived in Spain for 16 years now and my company Residencia Estates was established in 2000.
Why did you choose Marbella?
Marijke De Nier: The swimming pool manufacturer that I worked for in Barcelona moved to Marbella, and I moved with them. So it really was more of an coincidence, but once I lived here, I didn’t want to leave.
Tell us your greatest business or personal accomplishment?
Marijke De Nier: To have created a healthy business with a fantastic, young and dedicated team.
Why would you recommend the Costa del Sol for business and Lifestyle?
Marijke De Nier: The Costa del Sol is still very much a place where if you are willing to work hard and be flexible to the many different cultures, you can be very successful. As for the lifestyle, the weather and the light make it possible to enjoy the days much more and enjoy the outdoors.
Another thing I find very stimulating is the cosmopolitan make-up of this area, where at any given time you could be surrounded by up to ten different nationalities. During a normal day at the office, for instance, you’ll hear at least four different languages being spoken throughout.
If you could change one thing about Spain, what would it be?
Marijke De Nier: The enormous amount of paperwork that one has to go through at the Ayuntamiento or any other official institute.

Marijke De Nier: Hard working, honest and positive.
What is your favourite Restaurant in Marbella?
Marijke De Nier: There are so many, depending on the occasion; Zozoi, The Beach House, The Fondue Lounge and Sakura to name a few. All different kinds of food with great service!
What is the last film you saw at the Cinema or DVD?
Marijke De Nier: Fahrenheit 9/11, I don’t tend to go to the Cinema or watch DVD’s in the summer, spending too much time outdoors!
What advice would you give to someone moving to Spain?
Marijke De Nier: Learn the language!
