About Enrique Simonet Lombardo:
Born in Valencia in 1866, Enrique Simonet Lombardo first studied at the Saint Charles Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia. He obtained a grant to study painting in the Fine Arts Academy in Rome in 1887 where he went on in 1890 to paint the famous Heart’s anatomy also known as She had a heart! or Autopsy.
This magnificent painting shows a coroner performing an autopsy on a young woman lying on a table. The realistic severity of the subject has led some to categorise this painting within social realism but the work really stands out for its contrasts of light and shadow. This painting is one of the most valued displayed at the Museum of Malaga and bought Enrique Simonet Lombardo international recognition.
Another controversial painting that bought him world recognition is The Beheading of Saint Paul, painted by Enrique Simonet Lombardo during his stay in Rome in 1887. This can be seen at the Cathedral of Malaga.
He also acquired several other international awards including Madrid in 1892, Chicago in 1893, Barcelona in 1896 and Paris in 1900 and in 1911 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid.
Enrique Simonet Lombardo died in Madrid in 1927 at the age of 61.
