Facts about Russian Christmas Eve:
A day of both solemn rituals and jubilant celebration, the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates its Christmas 13 days after the Western Christmas in accordance with the old Julian calendar.
After the 1917 Revolution, Christmas and other religious celebrations were banned throughout Russia. 75 years later, in 1992, the holiday was finally publicly accepted.
On the Russian Christmas Eve, it is traditional for family members to get together and share a special meal. Although the foods and customs differ from village to village, certain characteristics remain the same. Special prayers are said and some people even fast for up to 39 days (until January 6th) although most fast on the day all day until the first evening star appears in the sky.
The Russian Christmas Eve then begins with a massive twelve course supper which is given in honor of each of the twelve apostles. Although meat is never eaten on Christmas Eve in Russia, common dishes that are eaten on this evening include beet soup, dumplings, braided bread, salmon, stuffed cabbage leaves, dried fruit compote, tea, and doughnuts with rose jelly fish.
The most important dish prepared is a special porridge called kutya which it is made of berries, wheat or other grains that symbolize hope and immortality, and honey and poppy seeds that ensure happiness, success, and untroubled rest.
