Movies in Marbella

There are very few significant movie industries and Spanish film industry is one in the list. Spanish cinema is very much heterogeneous and dynamic in nature, and over the years with quality production it has earned a reputation of its own in international film and art scene.

These days, Spanish films are not only popular throughout the Spanish-speaking world but also other European, Latin America and Asian countries.

More and more films are produced and featured every year in international film festivals that show its growth and popularity. In the last year (2009) alone, nearly ninety titles were premiered, of which many are considered of high quality in terms of direction, acting and rich cinematography.

The Marbella municipality in an initiative to celebrate Spanish cinema has scheduled few popular films for projections in the month of July both in Marbella town, on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and in San Pedro on Tuesday and Friday.

Movie lovers will have a chance to watch some of their favourite films. Of the list of movies selected for screening, except two, most are recently released and considered popular. Here is the list of movies and days of screening:

Friday, July 2
Celda 211
This is a 2009-released Spanish prison film directed by Daniel Monzon that won much critical acclaim with as many as eight Goya Awards.

Tuesday, July 6
Gordos (English title: Fat People)
Directed, written by Daniel Sanchez Arevalo, this film shows society’s obsession with appearances.

Friday, July 9
Nacidas para sufrir (or Born to Suffer)
Set in rural Spain, director Miguel Albaladejo very skilfully talks about the lives of women in Spain’s pueblos . This is a dramatic comedy of female solidarity.

Tuesday, July 13
Mapa de los sonidos de Tokio (Map of the Sounds of Tokyo)
This is a 2009 Spanish drama film directed by Isabel Coixet. The film that features actor Sergi Lopez is filmed in Japan’s capital city Tokyo and it even went for competition in the main competition at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival.

Friday, July 16
Yo, También (Me, Too)
This is a thought provoking and sardonic social drama with Daniel (Pablo Pineda) and Nuria (Lola Duenas) in the lead role. Certainly a must watch when it takes you to the life of a 34-year-old man with Down’s Syndrome who falls in love with a woman who has never really been loved.

Tuesday, July 20
Castillos de carton
Directed by Salvador Garcia Ruiz, this is a soft and sweet story about three teenage and their passage to adulthood. The film talks about the world of painting and some very special relationships as they progress from their school lives to see the real world.

Friday, July 23
La isla interior (The Island Inside)
Directors Felix Sabroso and Dunia Ayaso present this touchy drama of a dysfunctional family and their inner island in which they live in for long with spiritual isolation. With a cast of leading luxury Alberto San Juan, Candela Pena and Cristina Marcos, this is worth watching.

Hour: 20:00 and 22:15 hours.
