Kofi Annan:
Born in Ghana in 1938, Kofi Annan was the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, serving from 1997 to 2006. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for peace jointly with the United Nations in 2001.
As a constant advocate for human rights, the rule of law, the Millennium Development Goals and Africa, one of Kofi Annan´s main priorities as Secretary-General was a comprehensive programme of reform aimed at revitalizing the United Nations and making the international system more effective.
“Only when government is grounded in the rule of law — fairly and consistently applied — can society rest on a solid foundation. Leaders must ensure that the rules are respected — that they protect the rights and property of individual citizens. Leaders must also hold themselves to the same rules, the same restraints — never above them.” -Address by Kofi Annan, The Fifth Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture, July 2007
