Born in 1946, American soul singer-songwriter Bettye LaVette, who made her first record at sixteen, was unknown to the public until only a few years ago but amongst her fans of soul, is a legendary figure with one of the strongest soul voices along with Aretha Franklin.

In a career spanning over 40 years she has maintained a level of almost unrivaled quality and consistency, wherever she recorded, for whatever label – John Ridley, soul historian.
