Dating back to late medieval court life, the idea of a Masquerade Ball or Masked party was originally designed to celebrate a marriage or mark a point in a royal dynasty.

The important guests of the time would wear both a costume and their masquerade mask, and, as you can imagine, the anonymity this provided to a class that were governed by the strictest etiquette and constricting rules of behaviour was both great fun and extremely irresistible.

These balls were particularly popular in Venice where they were held for the upper classes and have since been associated with the tradition of the Venetian Carnival.

With the fall of the VenetianRepublic near the end of the 18th century, the use and tradition of masquerade masks gradually began to decline, until they basically disappeared altogether. Not until the early 1900’s did they become popular again across Europe.
