Prominent Spanish artist, Pablo Palazuelo, is having his work exhibited at the Museo del Grabado Español Contemporaneo in Marbella until February 12th. Since it opened its doors in 1992, the museum has been an exciting venue reflecting on, in particular, Spanish contemporary art.
Pablo Palazuelo
Born in Madrid in 1916, Pablo Palazuelo, a painter and sculpture, is regarded as one of the leading Spanish artists of this century.
He first began his studies in 1933 at the School of Arts and Crafts at Oxford University and returned to Madrid 6 years later where he began to dedicate his life to painting. During these early years, he was influenced by Picasso and Cezanne in particular, and from 1947 his art gradually appeared more abstract.
A year later, he was awarded a grant by the French Institute in Madrid to continue with his art in Paris and that same year, in 1948, he was chosen to exhibit at the Salon de Mai, which led to him being asked to join the prestigious Galérie Maeght (now known as the Galérie Lelong), an association of nearly fifty years that still continues.
Pablo Palazuelo went on to receive the much desired Kandinsky Prize in 1952. Two years later his sculptural work began, leading to three-dimensional geometric forms and he continued to explore these forms in painting and sculptures after he returned to Spain in 1969.
Pablo Palazuelo died on October 3, 2007 in Madrid at the age of 90.
– “one of the most important figures in abstract art of the second half of the 20th century” and “a great loss for the world“. – Culture Minister Cesar Antonio Molina, immediately after hearing the news of his death.
