Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, is to perform at the Congress Palace of Torremolinos

The first lady of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, will be performing at the Congress Palace of Torremolinos on February 5th.

About Wanda Jackson:

Born in Oklahoma in 1937, Wanda Jackson found fame in the 50s and 60s as one of the first popular female rockabilly singers of all time. However, in the early 60´s, with the world changing rapidly and rockabilly losing its popularity, Wanda Jackson turned to country music and had a successful career until 1973 with mainstream country hits such as “Tears Will Be the Chaser for Your Wine”, “A Woman Lives for Love” and “Fancy Satin Pillows”.

She first learnt to sing in a church gospel choir but it was when her father bought her a guitar in 1943 that she practiced relentlessly and music became her life. Her mother once said, “Wanda wasn’t like other children after the guitar came into her life.”

Wanda Jackson was still at school when popular country singer Hank Thompson heard her sing on an Oklahoma City radio show. He asked her to record with his band in 1954 and she subsequently went on to release her debut record in 1956.

She even dated Elvis Presley for a while! Won over by her voice, he encouraged her to sing Rock & Roll as he was convinced that it was going to be the next big thing! Luckily she finally listened to him..

Lately, Wanda Jackson has enjoyed a popularity revival among rockabilly devotees in Europe, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an Early Influence on April 4, 2009. Even today she ranks as one of the best rockabilly singers ever, male or female.
