Facts about Rio Carnival:
The carnival, much like Mardi Gras, is a pre-Lent party, with over the top fun and last minute entertainment before 40 days of sacrifice and abstinence!
Rio Carnival came about in 1641 (some say from 1723), when the Portuguese settlers celebrated Ash Wednesday with fabulous masked balls and chic, sophisticated parties.
At the beginning of the 20th Century, Samba began to make its mark on the carnival with the first official Samba School created in 1928.
The term “carnival” comes from the word ‘carnelevare’ that means to remove meat.
The Rio Carnival is largely influenced by the Venice Carnival and African-Brazilian culture.
The consumption of beer accounts for 80% of annual consumption and tourism incredibly receives 70% of annual visitors.
There are over 70 samba schools in Rio de Janeiro alone and they all parade during the 4 days of Carnival.
Over 300 bands are expected to take to the streets at the up-coming Rio Carnival this year.
Rio’s carnival is said to be the greatest show on Earth and is probably the most famous party in the world.
