On the last day of the month of February; the most beautiful coastal resort town Marbella celebrated “Dia de Andalucía” with much activities and fanfare. Marbella Town Hall organised various ceremonial observance events throughout the week to mark the autonomy of Andalucia community.
Die de Andalucía or the ‘Day of Andalusia’ signifies the importance of the Statute of the autonomous community with values of freedom, justice, equality and political pluralism within a framework of other autonomous communities of Spain.
The day of February 28, 1980 holds much significance in Andalusia history when the people of the community voted for the Statute that made them ruled by an autonomous governing body. It was later enacted by the legislative body of Spanish parliament under the 1978 Constitution of Spain.
Since then, February 28 has been declared as an official regional holiday and this year too Marbella Town Hall had organized many customary events in respect and reverence to their historical identity.
Within the program of activities carried out on Sunday to commemorate the holiday event had occurred as significant as the Day of health, sport and solidarity for Haiti in the Plaza de la Iglesia de San Pedro Alcántara. Besides, the VII Subida a Nagueles small footrace was also concluded with high turnout.
Several municipal representatives also attended different events organized by the Asociación de Vecinos de Las Albarizas, as their part, to keep alive the enthusiasm of crowd. Also, the Paseo de la Alameda hosted a concert by the Municipal Band to celebrate the festival.
In addition, there were several others that had taken place throughout the week, including the reading of the Statute of Autonomy which staged on Monday (February 22), in the Plenary Hall of the City Council, by Marbella Mayoress Ángeles Muñoz with students from schools.
The councilman, accompanied by the Delegate of Culture and Education, Carmen Diaz, also on Monday (February 22) afternoon had visited an exhibition organized by the El Colegio Xarblanca (College Xarblanca) on the occasion of the celebration of Andalusia.
