Requiem, Op.48, G. Fauré

Veni, Veni, Emmanuel is a concerto for percussion and orchestra by James MacMillan. There are five main sections to the work following the introduction, beginning with a ‘heartbeat’ section, which according to the composer, represents, “the human presence of Christ”. This is then followed by a ‘hocket’ dance which are transition sequences that lead in and out of the central Gaude, after which the dance reappears.

The piece reaches its climax with the unfolding of the plainchant in chorale form and the work is closed by a coda in which the heartbeat motif and the percussionist on tubular bells have the last word.

At the summit of this religious piece of music, Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem is moderate in attitude, modest in melody and gentle in sound, making it resemble chamber music applied to choral melody.
